Ben Woodside is the best men’s basketball player in North Dakota State history. That is not hyperbole, that is fact and to hear last week that he was ending his professional career, brought some sentimentality from many in the local sports world. Long before Bison fans had heard of Frisco, Texas, they were enamored with the kid from Albert Lea, who was the driver of the NDSU Division 1 bus before Brock Jensen, Carson Wentz and College Gameday.
I visited with Woodside on Saturday to reflect on his career, from the promise of the SHAC to the struggles of living overseas.
Here’s my unofficial list of Woodside’s top five moments at NDSU:
- 2009 – Game winning shot vs Oakland in 2009 Summit League title game
- 2009 – 37 point performance vs Kansas in 2009 NCAA Tournament
- 2008 – 60 point performance vs Stephen F Austin in Drake Tournament
- 2006 – 31 point performance vs Kansas State at BSA (did miss game tying shot, likely fouled)
- 2006 – 24 point performance vs Wisconsin in knocking off 13th ranked Wisconsin
